Day Five Adventure Update!

Hello to all you lovely blogging buddies! It's been a bit of a long day for the Meandering Meares' today, but very enjoyable. I thought I'd pop in with a few photos & an update for those of you traveling vicariously with us before I head to bed. There are quite a few pics, so you might like to make yourself a cuppa & get comfy before we begin. :0)

We farewelled my brother  & his family at Ballarat this morning & hit the road heading south. We had a bit of a giggle at ourselves at one point when we frustratingly got stuck following a rather slow moving vehicle with out of state plates. You see, we were muttering unflattering things about tourists ... Then realised that WE are currently tourists! :0P After leaving the tourists to the main roads, we took a scenic rural road to a pretty place that the Fabulous Fiona is familiar with ... Colac.

Where we enjoyed a cuppa ...

... A look at the lake ... Not a nice lake day, really ...

... And a walk around the botanical gardens. These cinerarrias (not sure I've spelled that right) were such vivid colours that they seemed to glow. Then it was back in the car heading south until ...

... We fell off the bottom of Australia! :0) Well ... We stopped before that, but enjoyed the view. This was the start of our trip along the Great Ocean Road that follows the curve of the Australian Bite. So, we turned west ...

... And had to stop at Bells Beach ... Synonymous with surfing, though there were no surfers there today. We did, however, find a sign that gave us a chuckle ...

It may be famous, but Bells Beach didn't seem overly welcoming! :0) Back on the road, we spotted a sign that pointed to a chocolatiery & ice creamery ... YUMMO! So of course we stopped ... One of the advantages of a road trip holiday is being able to stop, start & detour when you see something interesting. ;0)

There was seriously just about every chocolate treat you could think of in there! However ... We bypassed the chocolate in favour of ...

... ICE CREAM!! :0) We both had a scoop of banoffi flavoured & a scoop of salted caramel flavoured ice cream. If we'd realised how HUGE the scoops were, we'd have ordered one each & shared. :0) GB had to help me finish mine ... & we waddled back to the car to keep driving. :0)

The weather started to get drearier as the day went on & we commented on how the colour of the ocean changed, too. This was taken at a roadside lookout.

You can see the darkening sky behind the lighthouse here ...

... & in the colour of the ocean here. We found ourselves caught up in some roadworks & had multiple delays where sections of the road were down to one lane. It was a bit frustrating, but with views like this straight over the safety rail, we ended up just winding down the window & listening to the rhythm of the ocean. We're on holiday, after all. :0)

As a result of the roadworks/slow tourist drivers delays & weather closing in, we found ourselves short of daylight (despite being on daylight savings time!!) & so didn't stop off to see some of the main attractions of the Great Ocean Road ... But we'll adjust tomorrow's itinerary to accomodate some backtracking ... Did I mention there were some definite advantages to road trips?! Tee! Hee! Hee!

And after a slightly late dinner (who cares?! We're on holiday!) I'm going to finish my cuppa & head for bed so I'm ready for tomorrow's adventures. :0) Stay tuned! Til next time ...

I'm loving tagging along with you two. We have been down that way a couple of times, but not for quite some years, so it's nice to see again. I do love that you are getting into the flexibility of being on holiday time. It is the best way to travel.
