Almost Back On Deck!

Here I am, almost back on deck and able to leave my tissue box behind long enough to type a post today ... I think I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel ... just hope it isn't a runaway train! :0) Nah ... feeling much better today, though nearly decided to cancel the day due to lack of interest and stay snug in bed when the temperature dropped to zero overnight! BRRRRRR!!! Hand in hand with that temperature was the biggest frost I can remember seeing since we've lived here! It was like a crunchy white winter wonderland outside this morning!

This is the footpath in our side street ...

... and this is GB's work van that was parked on the street. All of the windows were white with frosty ice.

{Edit: To all the lovely concerned blogging buddies who've warned about windscreen cracking if hot water is tipped over ... apparently, GB says I should assure you all it was actually luke warm water. Thanks for the concern for our windows, though! :0) }
GB had to pour hot water over his windows so he could see out to drive to work ... they prefer it if you can actually see out of a vehicle that you're driving! :0) You can see the difference between the windscreen that's still frosty and the side window that GB has just cleared. He even had to do this to my little car's windscreen ... and it was in the car port!! Then when I got to work, I was greeted with this ...

This is the car park where I work (actually I work in the office, not the car park, cos I'd need a really long extension lead for my computer! Tee! Hee! Hee!) ... all covered in crunchy frost ... you can see the tire marks where I'd just driven in! Bet you know where I spent as much time as possible today ... in my office with the reverse cycle heater going! Aaaahhhh!! 21 degrees for me! :0)

Now, with such a big frost, I was a bit worried about my vege patch, which, after 8 weeks growing looks like this ...

As you can see, it's all still growing nicely - missed last week's Monday garden update due to me feeling so icky that I forgot it WAS Monday!! After inspection, I found there was only a little bit of frost damage to the two types of plants that I thought were most frost-tolerant ... the beans and the marigolds! Still, nothing major, so hopefully all will continue to grow nicely. The snowpeas are going great guns and I discovered this today ...

A lovely flower on my peas! OK ... those of you with really serious vege patches are rolling your eyes at my enthusiasm over my little vege plot here, but I'm having fun growing veges for the first time in years, so you can just humour me ... or skip over the garden report and photos! :0)

Since I spent the weekend camped in front of the heater trying to kick my lurgy and avoid the cold weather, I did manage to do a little bit of hand stitching, which felt good after not much happening in that department for the last couple of weeks. In fact, I managed to finish three pin cushions that have been on the "To Do" list for quite a while. I'd even cut out all of the bits to make these ... then got sidetracked and never got back to finish them ... until now!

Three cupcake pincushions looking good enough to eat. :0) See May Britt ... I FINALLY got around to finishing them! I'm keeping the one with green 'icing' ... funnily enough! ... and the other two will go into my giftie basket. They were a little bit fiddly, but kind of fun to make and play with and better still ... I now have three finishes to put on my OPAM list - YAY!!! Don't forget OPAM gals, update those sidebar lists on your blogs and if you can, send off an email to Peg or I to let us know the number of finishes to pop beside your name on our spreadsheet for June.

And now ... I think I hear the heater calling my name, so I shall sign off. Thank you all for your lovely get well wishes and emails - they sure brightened things up while I was feeling icky!! Til next time ...

CHEERS!

Love the pincushions, I've got a lovely three tiered cake stand, so I really ought to make some for that. I'm still amazed that you can grow vegetables with such a heavy frost, I hope they keep growing for you. Our peas are about that big too. It's good to hear you're on the mend, hopefully you'll feel completely better soon.

Ahhhhh NEVER pour hot water over your frosted car windows and windscreen. Use cold water to defrost. Hot water can crack it. You don't want to have to replace a windscreen!
Your garden is growing well :)
I love the pin cushions. They are so cute and no calories and the little plate you have them on... I have the exact same plate. Its part of a set with a little teapot and cup for tea for one my mum gave me for my birthday a few years ago. Love it!

That frost came here too this morning - took a bit to get the windows clean. Spreading himself around about now!

Glad the bugs have found a new home.

Good enough to eat cup cakes - too cute.

Yes True GB you can crack the window with hot water. Not Good!!

So pleased you are shacking the lurgy I seem to be getting my back again, may need that toilet roll back.LOL

Your garden is doing really well and I think it is great you have a flower on your snowpeas.

Your cupcake pincushion are soo cute.

Your cupcake pincushions are adorable.

My first thought when you talked about using water to melt the frost was 'why aren't you using the ice scraper'. Yup, we come from different worlds. If you never have frost, you never need the ice scraper... DUH!

I guess it's like the visitor we had in winter who was amazed at all the electric cars. (All of the cars were plugged in.) We have block heaters that we plug in when things get cold because at -30 it's possible to crack the engine block.

You know, we've got a good 1/2 dozen ice scrapers and only 1 car. Want me to send a spare your way?

Ooooh, not keen on all that frost ... brrrrr!!! Glad the vegies are tough and surviving the cold. I remember growing snow peas when Bear was little, every time I hung out the washing she'd sit and eat them off the vine he he he - won't eat them cooked though lol.
Glad you're feeling better you poor thing, hope the rotten germs stay away now!!
Take care,

Joy :o)

Hi Kris,

Sorry to hear you've been under the weather. I had hemorrhoid surgery on Wednesday, so I haven't exactly been aces either. I'm not sure if I'll have a June finish or not. I haven't completely given up hope; I AM off work on sick leave, after all. 8)

Take care,
Susan in Texas

Hi again :) Thanks for visiting my blog. I had no idea I had email disabled on my page. Do you know how to change that?
I enjoy looking at all you creations. Keep up the good work :)

BBrrrrr... that does sound very cold indeed. I'd say that is perfect stitching weather - what a pity we have to work.

Glad you are feeling much better Kris. Gorgeoous cuppies!!
