Day Seven Of The Flying Circus!

Greetings to all of my lovely cyber buddies who are traveling along with my Beloved Geek Boy & me ... I hope you're enjoying our adventures as much as we are ... Well ... As much as you can without REALLY being with us on the road. :0)

And on the road was where we were again today, with more driving than doing as we headed further into South Australia. We had intended to start the day in Mt Gambier with a stroll around the edge of one of their main attractions ... A large lake in the crater of an extinct volcano ... The Blue Lake. It is so named because in good weather its water is a clear, vivid blue. We were NOT experiencing good weather! In fact, it rained all night & continued to drizzle. SIGH! Still ... We braved the wet weather to climb to the most accessible lookout ...

The Blue Lake was a very DARK blue today. It was still pretty cool, but not the bright colour we'd hoped to see. My overactive imagination also had me imagining all sorts of creatures lurking below the lake's surface waiting to devour the unwary swimmer or fisherman. Yes ... I watch way too many disaster/creature movies! Tee! Hee! Hee! The other spot in Mt Gambier that I'd been told to visit was the Cave Gardens ... Which turned out to be quite different to what I was expecting, but well worth a look. The gardens are right in the middle of the city in a sinkhole ...

Can you see the street level at the top of the pic? There were several waterfalls cascading into the sinkhole cave ...

This is the largest fall.

And this was the smallest. Oh! Look who I found. :0) it was then time to climb back up ...

... To street level ... See? There's our Big Blue waiting patiently for us. :0) And the roses here were divine. It was back on the road again for us - After a bit of a scuffle with the Tomtom about which direction we were heading (for some reason it doesn't understand the OCEAN part of Great Ocean Road & keeps trying to take us via inland routes) we followed the coastline further west, stopping for a cuppa to stretch & warm up at Beachport.

Our view while we sipped coffee. Looks cold, doesn't it? No swimming today!

Further around the coastline at Beachport we found some surf (sort of!) but even the surfers weren't silly enough to be out today. :0) After chatting to the helpful tourism officer at Beachport, we took a little shortcut on a barge at Wellington to reduce our travel time by over half an hour.

We arrived just in time to drive on, crossed the Murray River in about 10 minutes & were off again, through some fairly bleak scenery, often with lake areas running alongside the road ... Including a PINK lake ...

Again, not a great day to view it, but there was a definite pinky tone to it. Then it was on to our 'home' for the next two nights at Victor Harbour. Again, the accomodation is a bit disappointing (can we say 70's un-chic decor?!!) but we have 'beach views' ...

Apparently??! You can JUST see a smidge of water over the grass bank. Maybe if we sit on the roof?!?! Ah well ... We'll be out & about more than in & gazing at the view, so I guess we'll cope. :0)

And that is day seven of the Meares' Meanderings reported in. I'll be back to let you know what mischief we find here at Victor Harbour to occupy us tomorrow. :0) Right now, it's cuppa time, so I'll sign off. Stay tuned for the next instalment! Til next time ...

BEAR HUGS!

CHEERS,
KRIS

Wow! 7 days gone already. Time goes so fast when on holiday. But then again you have covered a lot of area and seen some amazing places. Hope weather is improved tomorrow, but it’s still fun dodging the raindrops.
