Another fairly iconic tourist destination when you think about the Adelaide Hills is a small village called Hahndorf. It is the oldest German settlement in Australia & it's gorgeous Main Street stone buildings house a large variety of specialty & boutique businesses, making it a fun destination ... Though parking can be a bit of a nightmare! We, however, were fortunate enough to easily find a spot to park & explored away.
The stone buildings have a wonderful warmth to them.
While others reflect their German heritage. Of course, a visit to a German town wouldn't be complete without ...
... A German hotdog & ...
...warm apple strudel with cream. YUMMO! We walked the length of the Hahndorf Main Street & back again, finding some bits & bobs to buy along the way before we were ready to move on to another Hahndorf attraction ...
... The Beerenberg strawberry farm. This is one of the wonderful stories you read about ... A family owned & run businesses starting out small, expanding & growing to become a worldwide recognised company, yet still keeping its roots in its local community. We could have picked our own punnets of strawberries, but were a bit footsore & still had one stop to make ... The Cedars ... So we skipped strawberry picking.
The Cedars is the historic home of one of Australia's best known landscape artists, Sir Hans Heysen. The house is wonderful ... But we weren't allowed to take photos inside during our very interesting tour. We were also able to look through the preserved art studios of both Sir Hans & his daughter Nora, who was a noted still life & portrait artist who turned the art world on its head by being the first woman to win the prestigious Archibald Prize for portraiture.
This is Nora's lovely studio from the side. It & the house are surrounded by a wonderful cottage garden featuring ...
... Old fashioned roses ...don't they pop against the white wall?
... Bearded irises ...
... White irises & daisies ...
... & more bearded irises in a different colour. It was very interesting to hear the story of Hans & his family, the trust which is now responsible for the property's management, upkeep & preservation & to see first hand some of the original artwork by Hans & Nora. The glow of light that Hans somehow captured was magical. If you're exploricating in the Adelaide Hills, I'd recommend it for your itinerary.
And after all of that ... We were ready to go home & put our feet up with a cool G & T. :0) And we have a few plans for tomorrow, so don't forget to pop back. Right now, though, I'm KAPOOPED! I'm off to keep a date with my pillow. Thank you to those lovelies who have left comments on my holiday blog posts or Facebook links to tell me they're enjoying sharing our travels. It's nice to know there are friends 'travelling' with us! :0) Enjoy your weekend! Til next time ...

I love visiting Hahndorf. Such a beautiful place. So much to admire, and so many choices of cafes.
You certainly are packing a lot of adventures into your days.
A beautiful place to visit. So much to see.We visited there over twenty years ago.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.
I was hoping you would get to visit Hahndorf. We visited in 1989, so it as lovely to see your photos. I’m getting hungry just seeing what food you enjoyed. Hans Heyson’s home looks fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
